In 2004, the University of Otago was concerned that the existing Wellington School of Medicine, built in the 1970’s, was becoming dated with its current configuration, and was considered inadequate for future needs. As a result of a curriculum change in 2005, this future need included 80 additional full time students arriving in February 2007. The extra space would also allow a greater number of post graduate students through the provision of further appropriate office and laboratory spaces.
Octa prepared a “fast-track” strategy that integrated design with construction. Concept design was completed in October 2005 and a main contractor appointed in December 2005, with a thirteen month construction period.
Octa’s role included project management from strategy development with the analysis of options, appointment of Design Consultants and Contractors for this $20 million project. The completed facility was delivered on time and under the budget committed to the project.
