Port Otago Ltd, Wharf Strengthening

Dunedin

This was the next stage of wharf capacity upgrading at Port Chalmers.  A short section of the southern part of the container wharf was upgraded at the end of 2005 for the new cranes.  However, after further testing, the Engineer advised that the multi purpose wharf also required additional piles to provide the required capacity.  The resulting design was 94 piles driven through the wharf desk.  Once completed, the piles allowed wharves to be used by the new cranes.  This gave POL a considerable advantage with the new ZPMC cranes having the ability to service the largest vessels visiting New Zealand.
