Mobile Operating Theatre & Telepresence Suite

Octa project managed the construction of a Mobile Operating Theatre and Telepresence Suite for Mobile Surgical Services Ltd to enable low risk, day stay surgical procedures to be carried out in small rural hospitals.

This unique unit, based on a semi-trailer with expanding sides, meets all medical standards (including cardiac protection levels) to enable the delivery of high tech surgical procedures.  The management of the design and construction of the Mobile Operating Theatre had high degree of complexity in terms of mechanical and electrical services coupled with the requirement to meet LTSA transport and road usage regulations.

Through the use of high bandwidth (4M bit/sec) bi-directional telecommunications links, “mentor” surgeons are able to provide advice and assistance to the operating surgeon.  The distant surgeon is able to control the camera to enable selection of the most suitable view.  This enables experienced surgical practitioners to utilise Mobile Telepresence surgery to the “best” advantage and to assist in the introduction of new techniques and technology.
